As Orioles prepare for the playoffs, Camden Yards gets ready to feed the masses

Ryan Perlberg has seen Oriole Park at Camden Yards through the ups and the downs. His gourmet hot dog business, Stuggy’s, has been a staple at the ballpark for 11 years, slinging franks topped with jumbo lump crabmeat, macaroni and cheese, chili, jerk chicken and more from a stall in Section 71 on the stadium’s lower level. For some of those years — when the Orioles had a losing record and sparse attendance — business could be slow. This season has been a different story.“We’ve been there when it was a lot harder times,” Perlberg said last week, as the team clinched the division and geared up for its first postseason appearance since 2016. “To be along for the journey through all the bad years and the good years makes the good years taste sweeter.”With the Orioles scheduled to host Game 1 of the American League Division Series at 1:03 p.m. Saturday, Camden Yards’ concessions vendors have been doing some prep work of...

The Chicago Bears and Justin Fields have found some mojo on offense. Brad Biggs’ 10 thoughts on the skid-breaking 40-20 win.

10 thoughts after the Chicago Bears had another huge offensive game, jumping out early on the Washington Commanders and then burying them late in a 40-20 victory Thursday night at FedEx Field. The Bears’ first win of the season snapped a 14-game losing streak hours after the team announced Pro Football Hall of Famer and Chicago native Dick Butkus died at age 80.1. If the Bears have established an offensive identity in the last two games, things could get interesting. They put up 451 yards Thursday and 471 on Sunday in the gut-wrenching loss to the Denver Broncos. Who in the world figured the Bears would amass 922 yards in a five-day span? Two games doesn’t prove the Bears have figured things out on that side of the ball, but there’s a lot to dive into that is very positive.First, though, let’s talk about how the victory changed the mood for a team that desperately needed it, especially after blowing a 21-point lead at home last week in the final 16 minutes.T...

Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu find growth in competition for Chicago Bulls starting point guard role

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 11:37:46 GMT

The starting point guard position has been the least certain spot on the Chicago Bulls roster for two seasons. It’s a trend that coach Billy Donovan hopes to end this year as he seeks a long-term solution at point guard — a position battle honed in on new signing Jevon Carter and young talents Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu. Both White and Dosunmu have already earned and then ceded the starting role before, stepping in as stopgap replacements during their respective rookie years.Claiming the role this year won’t guarantee a permanent position — the Bulls still hope to see Lonzo Ball return to the starting lineup in 2024-25 — but it would represent a major step in either player’s career to move into the primary rotation.Yet despite being in direct competition for one of the most coveted positions on any roster, both White and Dosunmu see each other as one of their greatest assets in improving as players.“We’ve got the same mindset whe...

Stock market today: Wall Street finds some things to like in nuanced jobs report and erases losses

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 11:37:46 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is settling down in midday trading Friday and erasing earlier losses after looking deeper into the nuances of a surprisingly strong report on the U.S. job market. The S&P 500 was 0.4% higher after wiping out an early drop of 0.9%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 156 points, or 0.5%, as of 11:30 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite also flipped to a gain of 0.5%. Stocks initially tumbled after a report showed U.S. employers added nearly twice as many jobs last month as economists expected. The strength raised worries that a too-hot job market could keep upward pressure on inflation, which in turn could force the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates higher than investors want. Treasury yields leaped following the release of the report, and the yield on the 10-year Treasury again soared to its highest level since 2007. It was at 4.77%, up from 4.72% late Thursday. Wall Street hates high interest rates because they knock down prices for a...

Pakistan says its planned deportation of 1.7 million Afghan migrants will be ‘phased and orderly’

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 11:37:46 GMT

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan will carry out its recently announced plans to deport all illegal immigrants, including 1.7 million Afghans, in a “phased and orderly manner,” the foreign ministry said Friday. The statement is likely meant to assuage international concerns and calm fears among Afghan refugees in Pakistan after Islamabad’s unexpectedly said Tuesday that all migrants — including the Afghans — without valid documentation will have to go back to their countries voluntarily before Oct. 31 to avoid mass arrests and forced deportation. This sent a wave of panic among those living in this Islamic country without papers and drew widespread condemnation from rights groups. Activists say any forced deportation of Afghans will put them at a grave risk. Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Friday the new policy is not aimed at Afghans only. “We have been hosting Afghans refugees generously for the past four decades” when millions ...

Iowa Democrats announce plan for January caucus with delayed results in attempt to keep leadoff spot

WASHINGTON (AP) — Iowa’s Democratic Party announced Friday it will hold a caucus on Jan. 15 but won’t release the results until early March, attempting to retain their state’s leadoff spot on the presidential nominating calendar without violating a new national party lineup that has South Carolina going first for 2024.Iowa Republicans have already scheduled their caucus for that day, which falls on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. But while the GOP’s caucus will kick off voting in the party’s competitive presidential primary, Democrats will only meet in person then to participate in down-ballot races and deal with nonpresidential party business. Democrats’ presidential contest will instead be held by mail throughout January and February, with party officials not releasing the results until Super Tuesday on March 5. “We believe this delegate selection plan is definitely a compromise,” Rita Hart, chair of the Iowa Democratic Party, said on a conf...
