Maura Healey’s administration is facing a lawsuit after the governor announced earlier this month that the state would no longer guarantee housing for those protected under the state’s right-to-shelter law.Lawyers for Civil Rights Boston filed the class action lawsuit Friday on behalf of three families the organization said are “on the brink of homelessness.”The lawsuit seeks an emergency court hearing and a temporary restraining order to stop the state from “undermining” the right-to-shelter law, a release from the organization said.Healey announced on Oct. 16 that the state’s emergency assistance shelter system was reaching capacity, and that the state may not be able to guarantee housing starting Nov. 1.Under a 1983 law, Massachusetts is the only state in the country that has a legal obligation to shelter unhoused families and pregnant women. The shelter system has been strained over the past year, as an influx of new immigrants has s...

Patriots’ latest loss shows recent offensive surge was just a fluke

Patriots’ latest loss shows recent offensive surge was just a fluke MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Patriots’ brief offensive revitalization was fun while it lasted. It also wasn’t real. After last week’s win over the Bills, we asked where that team came from. It was apparent where the team that lost 31-17 to the Dolphins was hiding. This was the same team that struggled over and over again through the first six weeks of the season. The Patriots struggled to move the ball in Sunday’s loss in Hard Rock Stadium, gaining just 218 total yards on 51 plays, and so many of the issues that plagued them in blowout losses earlier in the season tormented them once more in Week 8.Related ArticlesNew England Patriots | Mac Jones, Patriots can’t keep up with Dolphins in 31-17 Week 8 loss New England Patriots | Patriots quickly rule out Kendrick Bourne with knee injury vs. Dolphins New England Patriots | Patriots lose starting wide receiver to head injury in Week 8 vs. Dolphins New England...

No new tents, Wu says ahead of Mass and Cass enforcement push Boston is ready to work with the people currently living at the corner of Mass and Cass when an ordinance banning camping there goes into effect, but the tents will come down, the city’s mayor reiterated this weekend.Residents there now have been notified of the new rule in several languages, according to the Mayor Michelle Wu. Any newcomers will be met by a coordinated team of social workers and law enforcement who will inform them new tents “won’t be able to go up.”“And if it is up, it will be asked to be taken down,” Wu told WCVB.The tent and tarp shelters now set at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard, also known as Methadone Mile, will be struck starting November 1, when an amended version of Wu’s anti-camping ordinance takes effect. The plan is not to leave the dozens of people living there now, many of whom are struggling with drug or alcohol addictions or mental health conditions, with nowhere to go, Wu said. Sweet 16: No joy in Everett

Published Fri, 22 Nov 2024 05:29:15 GMT

Sweet 16: No joy in Everett As soon as the pairings came out, there was one glaring omission. In Div. 1, Everett found itself on the outside looking in despite a 7-1 record. The biggest problem was that the Crimson Tide were victimized by being in the Greater Boston League, where many of the teams are in lower divisions and struggled with losing records. Four of the wins came against Revere, Lynn English, Malden and Somerville, who have a combined 6-26 record and were the last four teams in the Div. 3 power rankings.“I don’t want to speak too much today other than I feel really badly for the seniors,” first-year Everett coach Justin Flores said. “We were one of the best teams in the state (ranked eighth by the Boston Herald), we played two teams in the Catholic Conference, beat one of them (BC High) and lost a tough game against the other one (Xaverian) who is the second seed.“We can not control our league situation. But we are going to have to find a way to operate around this with the schedule. With the...

UAW escalates strike against GM after landing tentative pacts with Stellantis, Ford DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union has widened its strike against General Motors, the lone holdout among the three Detroit automakers, after reaching a tentative contract agreement with Jeep maker Stellantis. The escalated walkout began Saturday evening at a Spring Hill, Tennessee plant, GM's largest in North America, just hours after the Stellantic deal was reached. Its nearly 4,000 workers join about 18,000 already striking at GM factories in Texas, Michigan and Missouri and Tennessee. The UAW did not immediately explain what prompted the new action after 44 days of targeted strikes. The added pressure on GM is substantial as Spring Hill makes engines for vehicles assembled in a total of nine plants as far afield as Mexico, including Silverado and Sierra pickups.
