RJ Barrett, Jalen Brunson bounce back in Knicks’ blowout Game 3 win over Cavs

It was sometimes ugly, sometimes beautiful and overall dominant from the Knicks.New York didn’t win style points Friday night but dominated where it mattered most — on the scoreboard — riding a resurgent RJ Barrett and an energized crowd to a 99-79 victory to take a 2-1 series lead. The Cavs shot just 36.8 percent on the evening, which was lowlighted by a disaster from Game 2 hero Darius Garland. The former All-Star missed (shield your eyes, children) 17 of his 21 attempts, as the Cavs managed the fewest points of the 2023 playoffs.Much of Cleveland’s poor production was about the Knicks’ swarming defense. Their active hands and feet. But the Cavs also weren’t ready for the moment at MSG, while Barrett (19 points, 8-for-12 shooting) and Jalen Brunson (21 points, six assists) rose to the occasion.Garbage time started early in the fourth quarter when Obi Toppin’s dunk provided the Knicks a 20-point advantage. Then the Knicks stepped on the oppon...Red Sox make statement with impressive 5-3 win over Brewers

This one could have easily gone the other way.Leading 3-2 in the top of the sixth, Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta had Red Sox rookie Triston Casas down 0-2 in the count with two outs. Peralta had been terrific all evening, with a two-run home run by Alex Verdugo the only real blemish on his line, but Casas battled back and drew a walk to end Peralta’s day and give the Red Sox a small opening.Unlike so many times over the past year, they wouldn’t let this chance slip away.Rob Refsnyder and Jarren Duran delivered back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game and take the lead, and the Red Sox throttled the Brewers from there to pick up one of their most impressive wins of the young season, 5-3.“You never know who it’s going to be,” Verdugo told NESN’s Jahmai Webster after the game. “It doesn’t matter if you’re in the starting lineup or coming off the bench, we expect everybody to be ready and contribute and today was just anot...Celtics give Hawks life, unable to overcome their scorching shooting night in Game 3 loss

ATLANTA — The Celtics knew they were going to get the Hawks’ best shot on Friday. After two convincing victories in Boston, it was expected. The young and hungry Hawks were desperate, ready to prove themselves, and had a home crowd waiting for them to show it.The Celtics have thrived in these situations for most of the season, with a target on their back after winning the Eastern Conference last season. But Friday night offered a humbling reminder for these Celtics that the road back to that stage is difficult to reach. There will be no sweep in this first-round series, which seemed to almost be a foregone conclusion after the Celtics had their way in Games 1 and 2. They got the Hawks’ best punch, and they couldn’t match it. They couldn’t overcome their absurd shot-making. And now it’s suddenly a series after suffering a 130-122 loss in Game 3 here on Friday night.“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” Marcus Smart said. “That’s why we let the outside noise continue to talk for us. It...‘I feel amazing’: Celtics’ Malcolm Brogdon enjoys healthy season thanks to new role

ATLANTA — While the Celtics’ trade for Malcolm Brogdon last summer was almost universally praised, one question lingered: Could the veteran guard stay healthy enough to be the difference maker Boston hoped for?Brogdon suffered from a bit of an injury bug over the course of his first six seasons in the league. Last season – in his final year with the Pacers – Brogdon only played in 36 games, mostly due to an Achilles injury. It was frustrating for him. But the Celtics then acquired him to take on a reserve role, a job he embraced and excelled in.The move not only led to him being named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year, it also allowed him to have one of the healthiest seasons of his career.Brogdon had his share of minor injuries – including right hamstring tightness that kept him out for four consecutive games in November – but he ultimately played in 67 games, his most in a season since he was a rookie in 2016-17. He also played in a career-low 26.0 minutes per game as his body wasn’...Bioluminescence has rolled back into San Diego. Here's what to know

SAN DIEGO -- Iridescent, neon blue waves have rolled back onto the shores of San Diego, marking the return of a popular, bucket-list item for nighttime beachgoers: spotting bioluminescence. The waves were captured on video by photographer Vishwas Lokesh, who first saw the glowing surf on Wednesday night in La Jolla. Lokesh saw them again Thursday night, recording the dazzling display between 11:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. Friday near the Scripps UC San Diego campus. La Jolla seeks separation from San Diego The spectacular display of bioluminescence is connected with a phenomenon called a "red tide," according to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. These tides that look as though thousands of glowsticks were dumped into the ocean are caused by a build-up of microscopic organisms in the dinoflagellate species, Lingulodinium polyedra. By day, these reddish-brown organisms in the plankton family gather at the surface, creating an intensified red color i...This weekend is to be the coolest of the past four — also 22 degrees cooler than last with daytime highs more typical mid March; below normal temperatures are to linger

CHILLY WEEKEND AHEAD WITH DAYTIME TEMPS MORE TYPICAL OF MID MARCH THAN LATE APRILTwenty-two degrees cooler this weekend than last, and expect the cool pattern setting up to last through next week, the following weekend and into the weekend which follows, taking us into early MayOnly 16% of April 22nds (Saturday's date) have produced daytime highs which rise no higher than the 40s. Yet, that’s what’s expected Saturday and Sunday. The normal temps on March 17th are 48 and 31, and the forecast for this Saturday (4/22) is 47 and 33—just about as chilly. The persistence of the cool weather is the product of another of these REX BLOCKS, where abnormally mild air aloft over northern Canada traps cool air over the Midwest. Blocking patterns aloft slow the progression of weather systems BIG TIME.The last REX BLOCK which impacted our weather was a week ago when we were in abnormally mild air. We were delighted to have a blocking pattern at work then, because we were enjoying the year’s first r...Zumbrota police say retired officer’s suicide will be attributed to PTSD suffered in line of duty

Let the record show that at 9:22 on Friday night, the St. Paul Saints and the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders experienced a snow delay at CHS Field. The game began with light flurries that disappeared for most of the evening. But with the teams tied 7-7 after nine innings, the snow returned, and was heavy enough to make it unsafe to play due to limited visibility. The delay lasted only three minutes, but added another element to what’s been a frigid homestand.Saints outfielder Kyle Garlick emerged as the hero, hitting a three-run home run in the 11th inning for a comeback 10-9 victory.Garlick was sporting a wide grin after the game, but also a butterfly bandage on his forehead. The latter was the result of acting out his frustrations from an earlier at-bat and causing some self-inflicted damage. The snow delay, the gouge to the head and the walk-off homer made for a night he won’t soon forget.“I was just trying to put a good at-bat together,” Garlick said of the game-winner. “I was c...Nationals rally past Twins with late-inning comeback

A ball that traveled less than 60 feet at less than 50 miles per hour for a double, a throw that let a runner advance and bats that were, at times, nearly as cold as the frigid April night were contributing factors on Friday night in the Twins’ second straight loss. The Nationals mounted a late-inning comeback on Friday, scoring a pair of eighth-inning runs, and the Twins were unable to convert in the ninth despite putting a pair of runners on with no outs, sending them to a 3-2 loss in the series opener at Target Field.“We have nobody but ourselves to look at for the loss, for a few reasons,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. And that starts, Baldelli said, with finding ways to get more baserunners on and bringing them home, easing the pressure on a pitching staff that has performed well to begin the season.Starter Tyler Mahle, a day after the Twins’ (11-9) bullpen was taxed in Boston, pitched into the seventh inning, allowing just two singles through his first six innings of work. Mahle’...Police respond to armed man having mental health crisis near Mall of America

An area near the Mall of America was closed Friday evening as authorities negotiated with an armed man who was having a mental health crisis.According to Bloomington police, a call at 4 p.m. reported a man with a large gun, parked in a truck in the parking lot at American Boulevard and 24th Avenue. The female caller then said the man went inside a tent set up at the intersection for traveling performances of the Royal Canadian International Circus and then began walking around.Officers found the man, armed with a shotgun, in the parking lot. He was uncooperative and refused to lay down the gun.The area was evacuated, though the Mall of America itself remained open except for an entrance near the scene of the incident. Authorities were able to contact the man’s family and learned he was in crisis and had access to firearms, including the shotgun. At 6:15 p.m., the man dropped his gun and retreated to his vehicle. Officers were able to contain the vehicle and continued to negotiat...Latest news
